Before Karate and Jujutsu there was Toshu Jutsu and Hakuda…

Before Karate Jutsu there was Toshu Jutsu…

In Okinawa, for a long time, using any kinds of weapons was prohibited because of a policy of prohibiting weapons. For that reason, they had to invent Toshu kuken, the way to fight without a weapon. This was especially true in the beginning of the 17th century since it was thought that fighting martial arts, referring to Chinese Kempo, was invented among Ryukyu samurai because their weapons were banned. In Okinawa, before it was called karate
– Gogen Yamaguchi 10th Dan (Founder of Goju Kai Karate)

Before Judo and Jujutsu there was Hakuda…

The origin of jujutsu is related thus: There once lived in Nagasaki a physician named Akiyama, who went to China to study medicine. There he learned an art called Hakuda…. When he returned to Japan, he began to teach this art, but as he had few methods, his pupils got tired of it, and left him
– Jigoro Kano 12th Dan (Founder of Judo)

Now you can learn HAKUDA KEMPO TOSHU JUTSU, the martial arts of Okinawa and southwest Japan and they were before Karate and Jujutsu became a sport.

About our Karate method “Hakuda Kempo Toshu Jutsu”:

If Shotokan, Wado Ryu and Goju Ryu are branches of Karate then Hakuda Kempo Toshu Jutsu is the trunk.

Toshu Jutsu is traditionally taught in terms of the content of its kata, bunkai, weapons and drills. It is a complete Karate system that we like to think is very much in keeping with the Karate practiced by the art’s original pioneers in Okinawa.

What makes Toshu Jutsu different however is that as well as being true to the art’s heritage it is also true to the realities of self defence.

The Bushinkai Method is fiercely pragmatic and combat orientated and students are taught the realities of self protection from day one.
